Retail Sales Manager, Alcatraz
Organization Description:
The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is the nonprofit partner of the National Park Service overseeing the Golden Gate National Recreation Area — 82,000 acres of national parkland spanning the San Francisco Bay Area, including Muir Woods, Ocean Beach, Crissy Field, and Alcatraz Island. The Parks Conservancy is a membership organization created to preserve the Golden Gate National Parks, enhance the experiences of park visitors, and build a community dedicated to conserving the parks for the future.
With our local and federal partners, the Parks Conservancy is committed to the work of supporting Bay Area national parks as places where we can further racial and social justice for our community and climate resilience for these protected lands.
Department Description:
The Interpretive Centers and Sales Department is responsible for developing and operating visitor centers throughout the Golden Gate National Parks, providing visitor information, orientation, and other direct services. Conservancy Interpretive Centers provide educational, functional, and proprietary park merchandise along with changing park exhibits. Interpretive Centers include Alcatraz Museum Stores, Muir Woods Visitor Center, Lands End Lookout, Warming Hut, Fort Point Park Store, Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center, and Presidio Visitor Center. The department also develops park books, maps, and interpretive and branded products, manages warehousing and distribution, operates the Muir Woods Fee Collection program and develops and operates the Conservancy’s online sales and wholesale programs.
Position Overview:
The Retail Sales Manager, Alcatraz is responsible for overseeing in-store retail sales, employees, and sales operations on Alcatraz Island. The Retail Sales Manager, Alcatraz is responsible for ensuring that outstanding visitor services are provided, income goals are advanced, records are accurately maintained, and expenses are controlled. The Retail Sales Manager, Alcatraz will perform other duties as assigned.
The Retail Sales Manager, Alcatraz is required to work a varied/flexible schedule including one weekend day and holidays as needed. The Manger is required to wear and to adhere to uniform standards. This position may require physical labor and lifting; therefore, the Manager is responsible for considering physical safety while engaging in strenuous activity.
Reports To: Director of Alcatraz Retail (DAR)
Supervision: Supervises 2 Assistant Retail Managers, 4 Retail Supervisors, and approximately 15 sales associates.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Operations
- Directs all aspects of daily sales operations
- Coordinates with Alcatraz retail leadership to develop strategies to improve business and streamline operations.
- Coordinates with Alcatraz management to set policies and establish protocols.
- Directs Author Program, ensures authors are supported and visitors engaged.
- Ensures the smooth running of in-store electronic exhibits.
- Ensures POS system is working to support sales volume, troubleshooting as needed and working with off-site team to resolve issues.
- Coordinates supply and uniforms orders.
- Coordinates mail-orders from Alcatraz to warehouse.
- Assists in leading and reconciling physical inventory counts
Supervision and Staff Development
- Directs Assistant Retail Managers, Retail Supervisors, and Sales Staff to promote visitor service focused operation.
- Schedules sales team.
- Creates effective communication avenues, ensuring a values-aligned work environment, fostering teamwork, and encourages creative problem solving.
- Coaches and develops staff in coordination with DAR.
- Collaborates with DAR to recruit, hire, interview, and select new staff.
- Trains new and current staff on topics including and not limited to: fiduciary responsibilities, product knowledge, Island history, and exceptional customer service to ensure the mission of the Parks Conservancy and the National Park Service are advanced.
- Coordinates with Alcatraz Inventory Manager (AIM) and DAR to support both sales and inventory programs, merchandising, and stocking, creating a collaborative approach to achieve visitor and sales goals.
- Plans and organizes workload priorities, delegates tasks, coordinates schedules.
- Conducts annual performance appraisals in coordination with DAR, in a thorough and timely manner.
- Ensures that all employees know and adhere to emergency procedures and internal and external security policies.
Financial Management
- Promotes income generation to meet financial goals and budgeted expenses.
- Creates and ensures accurate cash handling procedures and deposits.
- Collaborates with DAR, AIM, and Sr. Director of Interpretive Centers and Sales (SDICS) in yearly budgeting process, monitoring, and tracking budget throughout the year.
- Coordinates with Finance Team, as needed, to ensure accuracy of retail receipts and reports.
- Manages deposits and change orders with delivery service, coordinating with Visitor Services Admin and Accounting Department as needed.
DEI, Safety, and Facilities
- Ensures an equitable and inclusive work culture and environment, advancing the Conservancy’s DEI initiatives.
- Ensures effective communication and collaboration with NPS Alcatraz Operations team, and Conservancy Facilities and IT teams to ensure sites are safe, well maintained, and address any needed improvements and repairs in a timely, effective manner.

Education and/or Experience:
- Minimum of five years in high-volume and logistically complex retail, hospitality, or food service management roles.
- Previous staff supervisory experience.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, especially including Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of or ability to utilize POS systems.

COVID-19 (specific duties)
- Understands/complies with State and local health regulations and protocols at work.
- Completes mandatory Covid-19 training by designated time. Modules #1 and #2 required for all staff. Module #3 required for Supervisors.
- Completes daily self-health checklist prior to reporting to work for scheduled shift. Inform Manager/Supervisor at least 30 minutes before start of shift if you’re not feeling well to report to work.
- Reads, sign, and comply with Conservancy Face Coverings Policy. Must ensure all employees always wear face coverings on site (except while eating on break).
- Wears disposable gloves when interacting with visitors, doing tasks, or cash handling. (optional)
- Maintains/ensures staff always adheres to social distancing and COVID hygiene protocols.
- Sanitizes hands frequently and the POS equipment (credit card reader) and pens before and after visitor use.
- Assigns cleaning/disinfecting duties to staff throughout their scheduled shifts.
Physical Requirements and Work Environments:
- Work is performed in an office, retail and stockroom setting.
- Work is primarily performed standing, walking, or seated.
- Work may require squatting and kneeling.
- Regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment.
- May require lifting, carrying, and positioning objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Salary/Benefits: $73,000 - $83,000/year depending on qualifications and experience.
