Overview & Background
The Sustainability Reporting and Outreach Coordinator will work in the University of California’s Office of the President (UCOP) on projects that help advance UC locations’ (campuses and health systems) progress toward meeting their carbon neutrality and sustainability goals. The fellow will report to the Associate Director of Sustainability and will be part of UCOP’s Energy and Sustainability team.
Role & Responsibility
The fellow will support a number of sustainability projects, including the:
- Systemwide Annual Sustainability Report – updating data collection sheets, collecting, analyzing & compiling sustainability data, and compiling qualitative information from campuses.
- Sustainability Program’s strategic communication - producing the department’s bi-weekly newsletter, managing the Twitter account, and updating website content.
- Equity-centered climate resilience project – helping UC locations in conducting local climate impact assessments, developing a best practices library, and supporting the leadership committee and external consultants.
- UCOP’s internal sustainability initiatives – helping coordinate an employee resource group and implementing best practices for waste, water, or transportation
As a full member of the Sustainability Team, the fellow will also help support the Sustainability Team’s ongoing work, such as organizing systemwide meetings and events, supporting working groups to develop policies, briefing papers, and best practices, and supporting the UC’s Climate Action Fellows placed throughout the system. Current efforts focus on electrification & decarbonization, climate resilience, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
This position will provide significant opportunities to develop professionally, including:
- Understanding how a sustainability program is managed within a large organization
- Tracking, analyzing, and reporting on sustainability metrics
- Developing and implementing communications and outreach strategies across multiple sites and multiple stakeholder groups within a large organization
- Gaining experience in project management
- Understanding best practices across a range of sustainability operations topics (e.g., waste, water, food, transportation, energy, purchasing, etc.)
Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position will have:
- Strong project management and organizing skills
- Experience in data collection and analysis; knowledge of GHG reporting and accounting
- Strong writing and communications skills
- Knowledge of a broad range of sustainability topics
The fellow in this position should be able to:
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
- Think strategically about the best ways to develop and implement projects
- Create effective change in a large organization
- Guide conversations on potentially sensitive topics around diversity, equity, and inclusion
The position is based in UCOP’s Headquarters in downtown Oakland. Although there are hybrid schedule options, the fellow will be expected to be available to work in the office multiple days a week. Normal work hours are 8 AM to 5 PM – with occasional evening and weekend obligations.
