In this role, you will conduct field audits of books, records and tax returns of Sales/Use Tax in South Carolina.
Job Duties
- Review and conduct sales and use tax audits on basic retail businesses, non-retail purchasers, other service providers, end users, and consumers.
- Research and provide audit documentation to include taxpayer friendly language and all points of issue within the audit.
- Prepare and present audit findings clearly to the taxpayer, their representative, and any interested SCDOR personnel.
- Accurately prepare documents for possible appeals and criminal investigation referrals.
- Provide taxpayer assistance to include answering taxpayer questions by phone, fax, mail, or face-to-face in the office and in the field by performing on-site visits to businesses assigned by the supervisor.
- Participate in training classes, educational seminars, or other speaking engagements.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Requires one of the following:
An associate's degree and experience in accounting, auditing, finance, or tax preparation/analysis.
A bachelor's degree with multiple accounting courses may be substituted for the work experience. Transcripts required.
Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning
- Also requires a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications are not required but are considered when setting a starting salary within the hiring range.
- Highly Preferred: Eighteen (18) semester hours in accounting, auditing, tax or a combination. Up to three (3) semester hours of these 18 semester hours may be in business law
- Considerable knowledge of accounting principles, methods, procedures and their application to the South Carolina Tax Act and Regulations
