We are looking for an experienced and entrepreneurial Sales & Merchandising Manager, Omni & eCommerce, for our strategic Accounts. Responsibilities include developing the business strategy across multiple retailers, and product categories, building strategic relationships with key internal and external business partners, improving the end-to-end experience and results, and helping to shape the evolution of the Omni & eCommerce Whalen furniture business
The ideal candidate should be a self-starter with a passion for retail & eCommerce, a high level of flexibility and commitment, proven analytical capabilities and project management skills.
The role is inherently cross functional, requiring individuals who are interested in leading collaboration and negotiation across the organization. This role will involve frequent, executive-level contact and will require the final candidate to have strong presentation and strategic negotiating skills.
Position Summary:
This person will successfully manage the daily sales and marketing activities of our strategic Omni-retailer & eCommerce accounts driving Whalen products & licensed brands in store and on the eCommerce digital shelf. This person will oversee all aspects of the strategy of each of their retail businesses including merchandising, marketing, promotions, and performance marketing, as well as support the SVP and Director of Product Development on other Omni-retailer and eCommerce accounts. This role also entails partnering with the Inventory Planning team to support Drop Ship inventory management, planning, and supply chain initiatives.
Responsibilities:
Leadership and Management
This person manages all initiatives to position Whalen furniture brands to maximize sales, margin growth improvement, and efficient inventory planning with each of their Omni-retailer and eCommerce customers that they are responsible for, as well as support other Strategic Accounts in partnership with the SVP and Director of Product Develpment.
Ensure an optimal business result in the whole cycle of the product development process for assigned accounts including sample creation, pre-merchandising, price offering, sales meetings & presentations. This person must be able to maintain departmental performance and consistency. Must ensure efficient use of company resources in design, sampling, shipping and presentation of new products.
This person oversees the daily activities for their accounts to position Whalen for continued growth in B&M and eCommerce. This includes sales and marketing initiatives, item creation, retailer-specific content, event marketing, promotions, deals, all levers to drive our products up on the digital shelf, and performance marketing (pay-per-click), if available.
This person will develop strategies to grow sales and gross margin % with our Omni-retailer & eCommerce partners, while minimizing the freight gap% and lowering the OOS%.
Relationship Management
Develop and nurture relationships, in partnership with both our external Sales Representatives as well as accounts managed directly. Align Whalens goals and objectives with that of our Omni-retailer & eCommerce partners, to maintain a positive partnership.
Negotiate terms annually that demonstrate our continued commitment to profitable growth for both parties.
Identify compliance requirements and internal processes needed to optimally work with each Omni-retailer & eCommerce partner.
Merchandising
Manage all merchandising daily activities including item set up, item maintenance, price variances, and product catalog.
Develop promotional strategies and create initiatives to accomplish each product category goals.
Understand the retail and commercial landscape for Whalen product categories including:
- Product features
- Retail prices
- Advertising / Promotional Strategies
- Customer program and margin requirements
- Know retailer deadline dates for promotions and events
Marketing
Negotiate Marketing terms with each retailer, both direct accounts as well as in partnership with our external Sales Reps, where applicable. Determine best use of these funds to drive sales and improve performance on new items and top sellers.
Track effectiveness of marketing campaigns, promotions, and deals.
Create an annual marketing calendar that creates a comprehensive marketing strategy for each of our Omni-retailer & eCommerce customers.
Work with our Retail Partners marketing agencies to build a profitable performance marketing strategy. This will include PPC (pay-per-click), brand pages, event marketing, and other marketing initiatives such as Augmented Reality.
Inventory Management
Partner with the Planning & Inventory Management team to ensure optimized Drop Ship inventory levels on all best sellers, new items, and promoted items, as well as ensuring our Omni-retailer & eCommerce partners are ordering enough DI and Bulk orders to meet sales demand. Review in-stock position of best sellers and react to changes in product performance. Identify inventory gaps and potential problems before they lead to lost sales.
Supply Chain Management
Coordinate supply chain efficiencies to align our Omni-retailer & eCommerce customers goals with Whalens goals.
Identify more efficiencies by analyzing optimal distribution methods of each product- Drop Ship, Bulk, DDC, mDDP, Direct Import, FOB point, Blended Costs, etc.
Forecasting
Develop and communicate comprehensive monthly, seasonal (i.e., Back to College), quarterly and annual budgets to the Planning and Inventory Management Team so that they can reflect opportunities in the inventory demand forecast. Make monthly adjustments to item forecasts monthly to react to the actual performance of each business, incorporate all known marketing initiatives, seasonality, and competitive landscape that can impact the POS sales of each customer.
Planning
Responsible for formulating and negotiating annual budget plans for Omni-retailer & eCommerce customers in partnership with our external Sales Reps. These plans will be constructed at the retailer and product category levels.
Track weekly performance and provide feedback to the organization to make any necessary adjustments, actions, or decisions to deliver the annual budget plan.
Partner with the Planning & Inventory Management team to plan unit open-to-buys (OTB) for the Top 100 best sellers by retailer.

- Process Management: Can identify and articulate the processes and resources necessary to get things down efficiently and effectively
- Systems and Tools Acumen: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, and have aptitude to learn technical applications quickly. Salsify or PIM experience a plus.
- Risk Management: Anticipate risks and identifies contingency plans and processes to prevent disruptions when risks occur
- Demonstrates strong listening, written and oral communication skills, and presentation skills.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in business management, marketing or entrepreneurship strongly preferred
- 3 years of work experience, preferably in Sales, Merchandising, Buying, Account Management, or eCommerce
