Sales Engineer- Ordering and Specification Advisor in Ankeny, IA
The Specifications Advisor will work with the sales team, Peterbilt, XL, and the end customer in certain instances, to spec, order, change, and monitor new customer and stock trucks and trailers.
The Specifications Advisor with the direction of the Sales Director will evaluate and approve used trucks and trailers valuations of trades and inventory purchases.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Assist the Sales Team selling medium and heavy-duty trucks and trailers.
Meet or exceed objectives for new and used truck and trailer deliveries established by the dealership.
Study truck and equipment specifications to improve knowledge of product performance and application continually.
Understand and comply with federal, state, and local regulations that affect the sale of new medium and heavy-duty trucks.
Track changing vehicle market conditions and incentives.
Utilize the Company CRM (Arcadium) system to enter prospects, opportunities, and customer contact (visits) information, etc.
Stay informed of current vehicle and trailer inventory and location.
Work with assigned Salesperson to elicit requirements from customers, sales team, Peterbilt, government regulations, and industry standards to capture customer and business needs.
Design truck using SmartSpec as per spec information gathered.
Train sales team to be highly proficient in the use of SmartSpec.
Help train the sales staff in customized trailers spec’ing.
Review SmartSpec and trailer designs and documents assigned Salesperson. When truck/trailer design is approved, place truck orders.
Order all stock trucks and trailers in coordination with the direction of the Director of Sales so that sales program benefits are maximized to the advantage of dealership.
Track and analyze stock truck and trailer days on hand to drive optimal stocking mix.
Keep new truck Sold In Process updated for timely dialogue with all dealership service department teams.
Spec trucks for the lease & rental fleet optimizing for lowest cost of ownership and best resale.
Establish lease & rental templates that are consistently used as the “base specs” for lease proposals.
Provide follow-up and ongoing service to existing customers.
Maintain and monitor delivery dates of inventory units and updating them in Arcadium with the leadtime to get through the shops.
With the direction of the Sales Director. evaluating and approving used trucks and trailers valuations and appraisals of trades and inventory purchases.
Analyzing the specifications data of sold units.
Monitor customers likes and dislikes, track customer interest in vehicles not in stock (lost sales), dealership sales history, and conduct local market analyses to determine which vehicles to stock.
Conduct a weekly physical inventory and report it to the Director of Sales.
Analyzing the Trade Analysis report.
Monitoring change orders within the Peterbilt, Arcadium, Procede system.
Provide input and data for the review of inventory daily to ensure the proper mix of grounded stock for maximum turnover efficiency.
Maintain awareness of current market/wholesale values of used trucks for market area.
Coordinate with sales team for appraisal completion within 24 hours from receipt of request; five business days for trade packages or 10 or more; and five business days for unique equipment.
Embody and promote honesty, integrity, respect, professionalism and seamless execution of duties.
Actively wholesale trucks to meet the goals outlined in the Departments business plan.
Increase the overall profitability of the dealership by successfully mitigating used truck valuation exposure.
Confer with other members of the sales management team regarding deal structure.
Ensure that the truck sales staff is informed of all used inventory and current advertising efforts, including special sales.
Recommend the purchase of used trucks from auctions, other dealerships, or individual sellers to the Director of Sales.
Develops and maintains outside sources (wholesalers and retailers) for both buying and selling units, with contact detail input into the CRM.
Ensure that all trucks are reconditioned according to dealership and manufacturer quality and time guidelines.
Provide monthly used truck market updates to the sales team and MPG management.
Attend manager meetings as requested.
Prepare other reports for upper management as assigned.
Dispatch drivers for truck location movements.
Attend trade and conferences when needed.
Attend sales and training meetings.
Maintain professional appearance.
Other tasks as assigned.

Education
Bachelors Degree in Engineering.
Intermediate to advanced computer skills with fundamental computer operations, spreadsheets, word processing, database, e-mail, and CRM software.
Language Skills
The ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, legal documents, and government regulations
The ability to write reports, and business correspondence.
The ability to effectively present information and respond to questions, common inquires, or complaints, from customers, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills
The ability of performing basic math as well as calculating figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, statistics, area, circumference, and volume. Will need to gain a mastery of technical formulas for weight distribution, turning radius, bridge law, swing clearance and body integration.
The ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.
Reasoning Ability
The ability to give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Must have a valid CDL driver’s license and meet insurability requirements with the Company’s insurance company.
Travel
Must be able to travel, and at times an overnight stay may be required.
