Full description of the position

Do you want to help shape the decarbonization of the energy system in a safe and effective way through funding energy-related environmental research projects? California Energy Commission (CEC) is hiring a Mechanical Engineer in the Energy Generation Research Branch with a focus on engineering analysis, technical studies, and investigations concerning the technical, economic, and social challenges to decarbonization, such as the performance of the energy system in transition while ensuring its reliability, resiliency, and affordability.

The CEC Energy Research and Development Division (ERDD) deploys over $300 million annually to advance new scientific approaches and technology innovations to meet the state’s clean energy and climate change policies including but not limited to the areas of renewable energy supply, building and industrial decarbonization, sustainable transportation, energy storage, energy distribution, resilience and reliability, and carbon management. The Energy Generation Research Branch focuses on advancing cutting edge renewable energy technologies and approaches to support decarbonization of the electricity and gas systems, including clean hydrogen production; and advancing the knowledge of energy and the environment to promote clean, renewable energy and energy resiliency in our communities.

Desirable Qualifications:

1) Understanding of gas and electric system infrastructure.

2) Knowledge in environmental and public health impacts of the energy sector

3) Resilience options that prepare the energy system for a changing climate.

4) Knowledge of energy transition to zero carbon fuels

5) Strong research and analytical skills and ability to make well-supported recommendations for planning and decision-making.

6) Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize work activities, and deliver high-quality, timely work products.

7) Ability to draft, review, and edit technical information for various audiences.

8) Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
