About the BSO
Founded in 1881, the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is one of the premier orchestras in the world. The BSO is committed to bringing world class music and performances to the local and international communities. The key to our success has been our employees from the musicians onstage to those behind the scenes.
About the Role
Creates strategy, implements projects, and assesses success for all Development communications to support the Development team’s ongoing fundraising and donor relations efforts. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer and in close collaboration with the Development Directors, and the President’s Office and Office of Board Relations, the Director of Development Communications works cross-functionally throughout the organization and across the Development team to ensure strategic, effective, and appropriate internal and external communications that increase the understanding of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s institutional identity, mission, impact, and valued constituents.
Job Responsibilities
  • Plan, compose, and implement effective print and digital Development communications for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, and Tanglewood that contribute to donor acquisition and increasing donor retention. Additionally, Development communications will be analyzed and reported on for effectiveness across all project types, various audiences, and within the goals of the Development department as well as the entire organization.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Development team and the Marketing, Public Relations and Press, and Publications offices to lead Development communications plans, provide unique donor-centric assets, and align production schedules.
  • In collaboration with the Donor Relations team, build and drive the schedule for donor reports including content collection, writing supporting text, managing the approval processes, and implementing final reports that illustrate donor impact including the Annual Report, Endowment Reports, Special Project reports, and other related documents. Donor-centric assets will be collected actively through all seasons including compelling photos, videos, interviews, press releases, surveys, and other related written content.
  • Evaluate user experience, compose content, and update the Development presence on the BSO website to appropriately communicate the breadth of donor benefits, access to Concierge Ticketing, showcase donor event details, and build community across giving levels. Web development will be in concert with the Marketing team to follow appropriate brand representation, cross-department project timelines, and organizational style guide.
  • Compose and revise speaking points for Executive leadership, Development event guest speakers, committee presenters, and volunteers that both extend our organizational gratitude and illustrate initiatives that stretch across the organization.
  • Serve as a Development team resource and expert on editing, grammar, style, brand, and design, ensuring all content produced aligns with fundraising strategy and is consistent with our BSO brand standards. Actively pursue collaboration across the Development team to provide writing and proofreading support, examples include donor write-ups, Program Book Development Ads, Development Event programs, and Development Event signage.
