Full description of the position

We are hiring for the position of Retail Key Holder in Pickerington, OH.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • As a member of the retail store team, your responsibilities include; sorting donations, hanging clothing, pricing/displaying merchandise, providing customer service, running the register, working the floor, operating the cafeteria, performing custodial services, assisting Truck Driver in picking up donations, loading and unloading truck, working the ADC trailer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Sort Donations

  • Sort and grade textiles and wares for retail store.
  • Sort through donation bags for salable donation
  • Put clothes that are salable on sorting table to be hung.
  • Things to look for are that are not acceptable: torn or ripped clothes; buttons missing; stains; zippers that are broken; old fashion clothes; polyester; extremely wrinkled clothes; clothes with fuzzy stuff or pet hair. (During slow donation periods we can be more lenient on standards and when donations are heavy more restricted on standards)
  • When sorting through wares look for salable items that can be used again. Nothing stained broken, chipped, unappealing, things that are dirty need washed before pricing and displaying.
  • Ensure Goodwill Industries quality control standards are met, including textiles, furniture and other donations in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Person hanging should check
  • Test electrical appliances to determine safe operation. Plug them into outlet to make sure they work properly. If in working order, the cord needs to be wrapped and rubber banded. If the item does not work, unplug the cord, cut the cord and throw away, we recycle the cut cords.
  • Inspect textiles; furniture, appliances, small household wares, novelty items, books, toys, decorations, sporting goods and other donations to determine salability.
  • Furniture needs to be in good condition, no stains, broken springs, no rips, and no pet hair. Rule of thumb is to make sure everything is clean, rip and stain free and re-usable.
  • Disinfect upholstered materials using Steri-Fab. Shake the spray container of Steri-Fab until it becomes cloudy. Spray evenly, all areas of materials that are stuffed (example: pillows, chairs, stuffed toys, car seats, beds). Put a Red Tag on the item that has been sprayed. This tag will include Goodwill’s registration number and permit number to sell used stuffed items, must have the date that the item was sprayed.
  • Cheerfully accept and reject donations from the public, based on quality and state requirements, provide donation receipts. Common words to use: “Can I help you!” “Thank you!” “You’re Welcome!” “Do you need a receipt?” When rejecting donations please give a explanation as to why we can not take it (example: a couch is stained or broken: bags of clothes visibly soiled or have a strong odor: cans of gas that are full or propane tanks or gas appliances that are attached to a gas tank). Always ask donor if they would like a receipt of their donations. Write down on the daily donation sheet how many donations per donor, such as bags or boxes

B. Hang Clothing

  • Using the proper method, hang clothing so that it is attractive and well presented. Identify the proper hanger to be used
  • Hang clothes with buttons and zippers fastened, collars turned down properly, pockets tucked in on all pants; two-piece outfits are to be hung on two different hangers and connected together.
  • Hang all clothes in categories such as all ladies jeans together, all men’s jeans together, and all children jeans together and so on. Hang clothes so that when you pull them off of the rack with your right hand the front of the garment is in your view.

C. Price / Display Merchandise

  • Price merchandise according to prescribed criteria; attach price tags.
  • Evaluate what the item is worth, you may use the price guide along with your own judgment or if you do not know what price to put on an item ask your manager. Always price to move the item out of the store.
  • Apply a yellow price tag with the correct date.
  • Perform stock duties by rotating merchandise, daily changing hanging items, and display merchandise.
  • Wares that have not sold in three days time or after Tuesday depending on your managers’ rule should be pulled or price lowered, this is where the correct date on your pricing label is important.
  • New wares need to be replenished daily
  • Clothes need to be continuously replenished throughout the day
  • Clothes need to be pulled at various times throughout the week in order to make sure your racks are not too tight and to give your customers more of a variety to choose from. Your manager will direct you on how this system works.

D. Provide Customer Service

  • Provide friendly and professional customer service by cheerful greetings, positive/exciting selling, polite telephone contacts, etc.
  • THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT!
  • Always use “Thank you”, “Your welcome”, “Can I help you”, “Please come again”, and common courteously
  • Never get upset or angry with a customer, if you are unsure of how to handle a customer politely say that you will get the manager to assist them.
  • Adhere to Goodwill Industries dress code; display a professional image and maintain an enthusiastic and helpful attitude.
  • Dress code includes but not limited to the following: No tank-tops, short shorts, open toed shoes, shirts with derogatory pictures or phrases.
  • Always present yourself with clean clothes, hair, breath, and without body odor.

E. Assist Truck Driver in Picking up Donations

  • Load and unload truck in a safe and efficient manner. This is everyone’s job, not just males
  • Never pick up something that you feel is to heavy, ask for help
  • If needed you may wear a back brace for support

F. Run the Register

  • Operate cash register accurately and efficiently; provide correct change, receipts, checks, charges, voids, discounts, etc.
  • Always follow the pricing guide for all pre-priced items
  • Always provide good customer service when operating the register
  • Always count your change back to the customer to insure that your register is correct, give the customer their receipt and say Thank you!
  • Complete reports accurately, including mark-downs, donation counts, time cards, register reading, daily business statements, deposits, cash drawer, etc., as assigned.
  • Do your paper work the same day to insure that you do not get behind
  • All paper work that is completed on a daily bases should be faxed to the office the same day as completed
  • Deposits need to be made the same day
  • Make sure your paperwork is completed correctly before you turn it in.

G. Work the Floor

  • Work the floor offering assistance and advice to customers.
  • Make sure store is in an orderly state at all times, clothes racks straightened, bins folded, air fresheners are filled, dressing rooms cleaned.
  • Put clothes and wares in proper places.
  • Assist customers when needed.
  • Wash hands often.

H. Perform Custodial Services

  • Wash and polish windows, shelving, display cases, fixtures, and various other items as required.
  • Wash and polish windows and window sills weekly
  • Display cases should be cleaned as often as they get dirty
  • Wares shelves and counters should be cleaned daily
  • Clean light fixtures as needed
  • Run sweeper on carpeted floors, broom sweep interior and exterior of entrances
  • The floors should be swept daily or whenever anything is spilled
  • Exterior entrances need to be swept often
  • Clean and sanitize lunchroom, and restrooms.
  • To clean lunchrooms you should use spray disinfectant. Wipe tables and chairs after every use.
  • Restrooms should be sanitized.

I. Work the ADC trailer

  • Work Attended Donation Trailer as assigned.
  • Manger will assign which ADC you will work at that day
  • Be sure to greet donors with a friendly smile and say “Thank you”
  • Process donations like you would if you were at the retail store

J. Teamwork

  • Train program participants assigned to the department.
  • Work together as a team. There is NO I in team
  • Help one another
  • Follow Goodwill’s polices and procedures when training individual
  • Know and comply with Goodwill, Inc. policies and procedures and ethics
