The University of Texas at San Antonio's (UTSA) School of Data Science and Office of Development seek a Director of Development with experience establishing and sustaining long-term strategic relationships with industry and philanthropists.
With strong leadership buy-in, the role will collaborate across the university on developing, supporting, and growing UTSA's data science education and research reach through a strategic industry members program, Friends of the School of Data Science, general fundraising activities, and related engagement programs.
This position reports jointly to the Founding Director, School of Data Science, and the Assistant Vice President for Development within UTSA Advancement & Alumni Engagement. The Director of Development will play a critical role in helping the college meet its fundraising goals for the university's $500 million campaign, Be Bold: A Campaign for Our Future.

- Develop and implement fundraising strategies for qualifying, cultivating and soliciting prospects for the School of Data Science, including for the strategic industry members program, Friends of the School of Data Science, related fundraising priorities and engagement programs.
- Meet or exceed defined visit and fundraising goals.
- Manage a personal portfolio of major gift and principal gift donors and prospects.
- Responsible for discovery, pipeline building, strategic engagement activities as well as moves management with major gift donors and prospects.
- Contribute to and sometimes lead the creation of internal and external communications and overall public relations and marketing for SDS, inclusive of the University's Development Board meetings, the school's External Advisory Board meetings, annual Giving Days, and various fundraising activities.
- Collaborate with central advancement teams to ensure accurate gift recording, reporting and acknowledgement process for all gifts to SDS. Utilize Raiser's Edge NXT to enter donor activity, submit contact reports, and track fundraising.
- Serve as lead for the school in the stewardship of strategic industry members and liaison for the Friends of SDS and external Advisory Board, as well as other industry stakeholders and the local tech community. Develop and sustain relationships with the key influencers at member companies.
- Prepare Founding Director, other administration or volunteers for development activities. Nurture relationships and collaborate with faculty and other subject matter experts at the university needed to realize the strategies and fully steward the relationships.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and five years of relevant experience. Up to two years of additional education may be substituted for experience on a one for one basis
- Proven track record of building excellent donor relationships and closing five+ figure gifts.
- Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communications skills to establish and maintain good working relationships within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
- Demonstrated ability to make cold calls as well as to develop cultivation and solicitation strategies.
- Highly effective organizational skills. Detail-oriented, self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work well with diverse groups of constituents/colleagues as a team member and as a leader in a complex organizational environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree or PhD in science, technology or engineering field, MBA, or other related advanced degree.
- Seven years of professional fundraising experience securing private support for a university or service organization.
- Demonstratable knowledge of data science and analytics applications, methods, and technology preferred.
- Experience in major gift or corporate fundraising and/or equivalent corporate/industry experience and/or partnership alliance management.
- Proven track record of building excellent donor relationships and closing six+ figure gifts.
- Experience in collaborating with a team involving different phases of advancement including communications, special events and alumni relations.
- Experience working with advisory council members and other volunteers.
- Familiar with San Antonio business and philanthropic communities.
- Knowledge of development information systems, preferably Raiser's Edge and NXT.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel and Outlook or equivalent email system.
Working Conditions
- Occasional evening and weekend work will be required.
- Must be able to travel and work hours with a flexible schedule.
