Organization Description:
Since 1981, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (Parks Conservancy) has served as the nonprofit partner of the National Park Service, collaborating with the Presidio Trust, partners, donors, and the community to support the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). The GGNRA stretches across three Bay Area counties, north and south of the Golden Gate Bridge, and includes iconic places such as Muir Woods National Monument, Fort Point National Historic Site, Alcatraz Island, Crissy Field, Mori Point, Lands End, and the Presidio of San Francisco.
The Parks Conservancy engages at the intersection of national park sites, local communities, social justice, and climate resilience. Department Description:
The Interpretive Centers and Sales Department is responsible for developing and operating visitor centers throughout the Golden Gate National Parks, providing visitor information, orientation, and other direct services. Conservancy Interpretive Centers provide educational, functional, and proprietary park merchandise alongside changing park exhibits. The department develops park books, maps, and interpretive and branded products, manages warehousing and distribution, operates the Muir Woods Fee Collection program, and develops products for the Conservancy’s wholesale and online sales programs. Interpretive Centers include Alcatraz Park Stores, Muir Woods Visitor Center, Lands End Lookout, Warming Hut, Fort Point Park Store, Presidio Visitor Center, and the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center.
Position Overview:
The Seasonal Sales Associate I is responsible for delivering outstanding visitor services, selling interpretive merchandise and books to help achieve sales goals, maintaining visual merchandising standards, assisting with inventory management, operating the POS system efficiently and handling cash accurately, and completing other tasks and duties as directed by Managers, Supervisors, and Sales Associate II’s. The Seasonal Sales Associate I will engage visitors about park history, natural history, and trails; San Francisco landmarks, and the programs and initiatives of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. All candidates must be willing to work a flexible schedule that may include both weekend days and holidays.
Retail Sales
- Welcome, engage, and deliver the highest standard of service to all visitors
- Sell interpretive and educational merchandise to help the Conservancy meet its sales goals
- Answer all visitor questions with courtesy, accuracy, and appropriateness
- Maintain positive and respectful relationships with the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District, National Park Service, U.S. Park Police, Park Partners, and Parks Conservancy colleagues
- Maintain clean and organized work areas including floor, backroom, and storage spaces, refilling supplies as needed
- Communicate any safety, product, facilities, or maintenance issues to Managers and Supervisors
- When there are immediate emergencies or threats to colleagues or visitors, notify Supervisors and Managers as soon as possible and communicate concerns to Bridge Patrol directly if there are no Supervisors or Managers available
Visitor Information and Orientation
- Provide orientation for the Golden Gate Bridge and the trails, history, and natural history of the Golden Gate National Parks
- Provide orientation for the City of San Francisco, local city and state parks, and transportation options to and from destinations
- Promote and sell memberships, explaining the value and benefits of joining the Parks Conservancy and asking for donations through our “round-up” program
- Provide information to visitors about Parks Conservancy programs, projects, volunteer opportunities, member events, and other ways to connect to the Parks
Training
- Complete all required training to provide the best experience for visitors incorporating safety, de-escalation, and bystander intervention into helping visitors navigate the park, trails, and historical and cultural resources
- Participate in ongoing training in sales, product knowledge, inventory, and Conservancy programs and policies.
Reports To: Retail Manager II, Assistant Manager II, and Supervisors
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent Visitor Services Skills and Sales ability
- Accurate and efficient cashiering skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Professionalism including a pleasant demeanor, reliability, flexibility with change, and ability to perform all duties with a friendly and helpful attitude
- Sales, retail, hospitality, museum, park ranger, or related experience preferred
- Consistent and punctual attendance for all scheduled shifts
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred
- Previous retail or comparable experience working with the public is a plus

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Work is primarily performed in a retail setting, on the sales floor and stockroom
- Standing and walking most of the day, but also climbing a short ladder, bending, squatting, or kneeling depending on a wide range of duties
- Occasionally lifts, carries, and positions objects/merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds
- Weekend and holiday availability required
- The Sales Associate I is required to wear a uniform for their scheduled shifts.
- Exploration of the Parks is included in the job to be able to orient visitors based on first-hand knowledge and experience
Pay Rate: $20/hour
